Frequently asked questions
Everything in plain English. Still curious? Browse the full Help Center →
What is a "credit" and how do I use them?
Credits are how you pay for the AI features. Each time the AI does work for you — reading a document, answering a question, or drafting a motion — it uses a few credits. For example, analyzing a one-page document costs 3 credits, and sending the AI a chat message costs 2. Everything else (uploading files, building your timeline, organizing evidence) is free and unlimited. Your plan gives you a batch of credits each month.
What happens when I run out of credits?
Nothing breaks. You keep full access to your cases — view everything, upload documents, edit your timeline, and organize evidence. The only thing that pauses is the AI (analysis, chat, drafting). You get a fresh batch of credits at your next monthly reset, or you can upgrade any time for more.
Do unused credits roll over to next month?
No — credits refill to your plan's amount at the start of each billing month and unused ones don't carry over. Think of it like a monthly allowance. If you regularly run low, a higher plan (or Unlimited) is usually cheaper than topping up.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes, with no penalty. Cancel from your account settings whenever you want. You keep your paid features until the end of the month you already paid for, then your account simply drops back to the Free plan. Your cases and data stay exactly where they are.
Is my case information private and secure?
Yes. Your files live in private storage that only you can open — every document is served through a temporary, owner-only link, so no one else (and no random web visitor) can ever reach your files. Your data is encrypted, protected by row-level security, and we never use your case information to train AI models.
What kinds of documents can I upload?
PDFs, Word documents, plain text, and common image formats (for scanned pages and photo evidence). PDFs are the most common for court paperwork and get full text extraction, so the AI can read and summarize them. You can label each document by folder (filings, exhibits, correspondence, etc.).
Which states does DocTik support?
The AI legal research and court-docket import are tuned for California and Nevada, where we have the most relevant statutes, deadlines, and procedural rules built in. You can still use every other feature — case organization, documents, timeline, drafting — for a case in any state.
Is this legal advice? Can it replace a lawyer?
No. DocTik is a case-management and AI research tool, not a law firm, and it does not give legal advice. It helps you stay organized, understand the basics, and prepare documents — but for any real legal decision you should confirm with a licensed attorney or your local legal-aid/self-help center. Always double-check deadlines and citations against official sources.
