Managing open items and tasks
Track the to-dos that move your case forward and check them off as you go.

What open items are
Open items are the concrete things you still need to do on a case — file an answer, draft a motion, gather a missing document, respond to a discovery request. They turn a vague sense of "I have a lot to do" into a clear, finite checklist.
How items get created
- DocTik suggests items based on your case type and upcoming deadlines
- The AI assistant can propose tasks when you discuss next steps in chat
- You can add your own items at any time
For example, when an answer deadline appears on your timeline, DocTik may add an open item to "Draft and file your answer" with the due date attached.
Working through your list
Open items appear on your dashboard and within each case. Tackle them in whatever order makes sense, and mark each one done as you finish. Completed items move out of your active list so what remains is always your real to-do list.
Keeping the list honest
A task list is only useful if it reflects reality. Delete items that no longer apply, edit due dates when the court changes a schedule, and add anything DocTik did not anticipate. A clean list you trust beats a long list you ignore.
From task to draft
Many items end in a document — an answer, a motion, a declaration. When you reach one of those, the AI can help you draft it. See "Drafting motions and court documents with AI" to go from a to-do straight to a working draft.
